Veterans Roll of Honor: MARTHA MOSEY

Branch of Service: United States Navy

Rate: Store Keeper First Class

Service history: Daytonian Martha Mosey served in WWII in the US Navy WAVES, attaining the rank of Storekeeper First Class. She was one of approximately 600 WAVES who worked on the classified “BOMBE” project housed in National Cash Register’s Building 26 in Dayton. In order to maintain secrecy, each WAVE performed only a small part of assembling the Bombe, not realizing exactly what they were working on. For instance, each woman wired, soldered or assembled different parts of the Bombe; one WAVE was given the wiring diagram for one side of a commutator wheel, while a second WAVE soldered the other side of the same wheel. The first completed Bombes were delivered to Washington, DC on 31 August 1943.
