Service history: Radio Technician 2nd Class (RT2) Makley served in the United States Navy from June 1942 to October 1945 aboard the submarine USS Sailfish (SS-192) and again as an Electronics Technician from May 1948 to May 1959 aboard the submarines USS Caiman (SS-323) and USS Cabezon (SS-334). During World War II he was awarded a Commendation Ribbon for meritorious service by Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. .
