Veterans Roll of Honor: BRUCE A. HOLLINGSHEAD

Service history: Bruce A. Hollingshead was born in Dayton, Ohio on May 13, 1964. He graduated from Park Hills High School in Fairborn in 1982 where he was a wrestler and discus thrower. He joined the Marine Corps under the delayed-enlistment program while still in high school. He entered boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., on July 7, 1982, and graduated from infantry school in April 1983. Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, he was sent to Beirut, Lebanon as part of the Multi-national Peace Keeping Force. In the early morning hours of 23 October, 1983, a truck loaded with explosives crashed through the security perimeter of the Marine Barracks; in the explosion that followed, 241 US military personnel were killed and 80 seriously wounded. Lance Corporal Hollingshead was killed in the explosion. He was 22 years old and had been married only three weeks when he was sent to Lebanon. He is buried in Byron Cemetery, Fairborn, Ohio.
