Service history: William Edwin Baker was born on 16 November 1892 in Rush Township, Scioto County, Ohio. He was inducted into the National Army on 26 April 1918, and was assigned to the 83rd Division, which served as a Depot Division. But in mid-August William was assigned to the 30th Division as a Replacement. Immediately upon transfer, William was thrust into the Ypres-Lys Offensive in Belgium. From Belgium the 30th marched south into France and fought in the Somme Offensive. On 7 October 1918, William was Killed In Action, only one month and four days before the Armistice. On 9 June 1919, the Military disinterred his remains from the Sevier American Military Cemetery and reburied him in the Bony American Military Cemetery. Then on 30 December 1920 William’s remains were again disinterred; he was buried in the Dayton National Cemetery on 21 March 1921. William Baker American Legion Post 363 in Lucasville, Ohio was named in his honor on 4 February 1920
