Veterans Roll of Honor: VIRGIL J. KIER

Rank: Corporal

Service history: Virgil “Whitey” Kier of Dayton, OH enlisted less than two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a .30 Browning Light Machine Gunner in D Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Corporal Kier took part in the landings in the first wave at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu, where he was wounded.
