Rank: Staff Sergeant

Service history: Sergeant Art was drafted in June 1967, receiving his Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He was selected for Non-Commissioned Officer School (NCOC 16-68) and graduated as a Sergeant/E-5 in April 1968 at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Sergeant Art served in Vietnam with A Company, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division - a unit written about by Colonel David Hackworth in Steel My Soldier’s Hearts. Sergeant Art was promoted to Staff Sergeant in April 1969. He was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor, Class of 2008.
